FINE AT FIRST MILDER TEMPERATURES The following weather forecast was issued at noon by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, covering the southern districts—Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Tapanui, Winton, Invercargill, Riverton, Orepuki, Bluff, Halfmoon Bay:— An intense anti-cyclone now lie* centrally over the Dominion, but pressure is commencing to fall in the south, with the advance of a shallow depression across the Tasman Sea. Forecast : Light to moderate northerly winds prevailing and freshening gradually. Weather fine at first, but clouding over, and later scattered rains developing, more especially in southern parts. Temperatures becoming milder. Seas slight to moderate, but rising about Foveaux Strait. RETURN TO SETTLED CONDITIONS A particularly sharp frost of 4deg, the hardest for two weeks, marked last night as one of the coldest this- winter.. Unlike yesterday, when a piercing wind made conditions most uncomfortable, to-day was much more pleasant, though a gentle north-east breeze detracted from the warmth of the sun. The thermometer reading at noon, when the barometer had a falling tendency at 30.1, was 46.9 deg, while the minimum recording was 38. Yesterday’s respective leadings were 50.5 deg and 34.5 deg.
