WILL PAY RATES WHEN HOUSE LET
GOVERNMENT AND LOCAL BODIES POSITION WHEN STATE IS IN POSSESSION [Fkom Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON. May 28. Ouo of tho most debatable points in discussing mortgage legislation in the last Parliament, said the Minister of Finance, was the payment of rates due to local authorities on account of properties which had reverted to tho Mortgage Corporation as the mortgagee in possession. There had been some sharp words in Parliament owing to local authorities being unduly penalised through non-payment of these rates. 'The procedure it was proposed to follow in future, though this was unnecessary to include in the Bill, was to pay rates when tho house was let. Mr Kyle: That is done now. Mr Nash: It can lie. lint has not been done, or we would not have had to lie making grants up to TS,OOO to local authorities.
