RETRACTION ASKED FOR

STATEMENTS AT BOARD MEETING A "BREEZE” AT WELLIHGTOK [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 28. 'After considering evidence brought by the secretary (Mr E. S. Hylton), the Wellington Education Board yesterclav decided to ask a member, Colonel T. W. M‘Donald, to retract certain statements he made at a previous meeting about the report of the special committee set up in 1933 t° consider staff salaries. As a result of this committee’s recommendations, Mr Hylton received an increase in salary. _ At a recent meeting of the board Colonel M'Donald said that this report had never been before the board, that he had not seen a copy, and that the sheet referring to the report had been wrongly inserted in the minute book. The evidence produced by Mr Hylton was a copy of the report, with what Mr Hylton stated was Colonel M‘Donald’s handwriting on the back. Colonel M'Donald was not at yesterday’s meeting, it being stated that he was in hospital when the matter came up for consideration. The other two Wairarapa representatives, Messrs A. Donald and W. R. Nicol, left the board room. Mr E. S. Hylton, J.P., secretary of the Wellington Education Board, is to retire on superannuation on August 31 of this year. He will settle at Tauranga, where he owns a lemon orchard. The board granted Mr Hylton three months’ leave of absence from the time he retires. Mr E. Dewhurst (Wellington) has been appointed assistant secretary from 108 applicants.
