TWO GOOD FILMS
STRAND'S FINE FARE Gaining increased popularity by its adaptation to the scrccu, ‘ The Calling of Dan Matthews,’ the best-seller by Harold Bell AVright, opens at the Strand to-morrow. This book, it is something more than a mere novel, has sold over a million and a-half copies, and has been translated into several languages. Himself a pastor, the author had nothing to learn of the vicissitudes with which the average man, striving to set the world on the right track, encounters. The part of the young minister is ably played by Richard Arlen, one of Hollywood’s best-known actors. The minister, even in his small district, runs into a good deal of vice and iniquity ; he is called upon to effect reconciliations in domestic disputes, and it is at one of these cases that he meets Hope Strong (Charlotte Wynters), to whom he loses iiis heart. With a capable cast in support, Arlciy and Miss Wynters give unforgettable characterisations. Douglass Dumbrillc, Mary Kornmau, and Donald Cook are said to give portrayals which are in the first category. In Jus production of ‘Sweet Surrender ’ for Universal, William Rowland has made a radical departure from the routine formula of screen musicals. The original story for ‘ Sweet Surrender ’ was written by Herbert Fields and adapted for the screen by John V. A, Weaver. There are more dramatics crowded into ‘ Sweet Surrender ’ than one will find in more than a dozen musicals written for the screen.
