POLICE COURT

THURSDAY, MAY 28. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. James Linton Beck Cottle was fined 10s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. * ALLEGED THEFT. Robert Frederick Lewis alias Basil TuL Bishop alias Frederic James Thompson alias Burns alias Stanley Lewis (24), was charged with stealing two rugs (valued at £2) from Charles Arnoit Shallcross. Lewis; There is a mistake in the aliases. The Magistrate: In what way? Lewis: In all of them. 1 have never gone under those names. Chief-detective Young; Perhaps if Your Worship will look at this police photograph of the accused, his fingerprints, and his record, it will put the matter beyond doubt. Lewis; That’s not my photograph. Mr Young: There will be another charge preferred against him of stealing a leather coat, valued at £6, from the same car from which he is alleged to have stolen the rugs. These articles were traced to his possession. Mr W. H. Carson (instructed by Mr C. J. L. White) applied for a remand until to-morrow week. Counsel asked for bail in Lewis’s own recognisances. Mr Young; I don’t wish to accept any responsibility for this man’s appearance. He was recently released from prison and is a rolling stone—here, there, and everywhere. If bail is granted I ask for a surety. Lewis was remanded until to-mor-row week, and was allowed bail in self of £2O and one surety for £2O, conditional upon his reporting daily to the police.
