WAITAKI OLD BOYS

ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Dunedin branch of tile Waitaki High School Old Boys’ Association was held last night, when Mr Maurice Myers occupied the chair. Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the Chairman said that the financial state of the association, as revealed by the balance sheet, was very satisfactory. The report stated:—Birring the year 17 new members joined the association, two transfers were received, while one member was transferred to the Christchurch branch and one member resigned. The roll at this date contains 220 members, as compared with 202 last year. The finances of the association showed ft satisfactory improvement during the year, the annual dinner and annual ball showing losses of £3 18s 6d and 7s respectively. However, £6O 5s was collected by way of subscriptions, arrears, magazines, etc., and of this amount the head association claims £26 8s 9d for capitation and magazine subscriptions. The sum of £lO was paid during the current year, leaving a liability of £l6 8s 9d. At April 30 the cash balance stood at £74 6s 7d, as compared with £53 17s 9d at the corresponding date last year. The improvement must be regarded as very satisfactory. While the majority of members are financial, it is to be regretted that 83 subscriptions are still outstanding. The president (Mr M. S. Myers) was appointed a trustee of the association’s endowment fund. Of the 240 policies, amounting to £13,000, approximately 42 were taken out by Otago members. Six members of the branch also made donations. The objects of the fund merit the full support of Waitakians. The repoi’t was adopted. Mr L. Hudson was elected president for the ensuing year. The election of a committee resulted: —Messrs H. Y. A. Wales, A. B. Armour, 11. O. Johnson, j. E. Matheson, J. F. Hamilton, L. A. Fisher, F. B. Kerr, W. S. Callender, and D. M. Hunter. Mr S. Glendining congratulated the secretary on the favourable condition of the balance sheet, and remarked that he was somewhat disappointed at the small number of members present at the meeting. He also urged that the new committee should endeavour to arouse the interest of the younger members of the association. On the motion of Mr Armour, ■ and after a lengthy discussion by members concerning the increase in capitation, it was suggested that the Dunedin branch was definitely in favour of increasing the capitation from 2s to 2s 6d, but disapproved of an increase in subscriptions. Mr Caffin suggested that a smoke concert should be held during the year, when the committee might consider defraying portion of the cost. It _ was also suggested that the committee might assist in the transport of members to attend the founders’ day function at the school. ■

The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to Mr Myers, the retiring chairman, and to Mr Francis (secretary) for their valuable work during the past year.
