COMPETITIONS SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING ' The annual meeting of the Dunedia i Competitions Society was held last even- | ing, with Mr J. L. Gardiner in the choir. Before the commencement of the general business, the Chairman referred to the death of an official of the society, Mr J. Beecot. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the Chairman said that the past year had marked the thirty-fourth year of the society, and during that period they had every reason to be grateful for the. success that had attended their efforts, and their thanks were due to the general public, who had so largely supported the society. The past year had proved most successful from an educational point of view, as evidenced by the large number of entries received, and the training gained by those taking part proved conclusively that the society was fulfilling the objects which led to its | inception 34 years ago. In connection with the financial position during the I year, they had been fortunate in carryI ing over a small credit to reserve, bub ! this had only been attained by the donations, special prizes, and scholarships donated by the City Council and citizens who recognised that the society was doing excellent and educative work in the community. The society had endeavoured to set a high standard in ! connection with the various competi- ! tions brought forward each year, and by the appointment of judges with th» highest qualifications for the various sections, the success of the past year amply proving this contention. The teachers had expressed their sincere desire to co-ordinate their views with those of the committee, and the result had proved of much assistance to the society. The attention and consideration given by the committee to the large amount of business brought forward during the year had his sincere appreciation, and it was extremely gratifying to note that prominent professional and business men had been ever willing to devote their services in an endeavour to extend and improve the objects of the society. Mr J. H. Walker, in seconding the motion, said that it was only due to the help received from the outside public that the society would present a satisfactory balance sheet. He thought that the public could give more support to the annual festival receipts which were not very satisfactory. The annual report and the balance sheet were adopted. Votes of thanks were passed to the president for his services during the year, and to the Press, which assisted the society ,in every way possible. The four retiring committee members, Messrs E. J. Smith, J. L. Gardiner. H., Braseh,' and J. G. Dykes, arid the auditor (Mr J. H. Walker), were re-elected.
