AMATEUR ATHLETICS

DATES FDR HARRIER RACES OTAGO CENTRE MEETING The Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association met last night, there being present Messrs C. W. Clarfi (in the chair), E. C. Isaacs, K. Miller, R. Thompson, R, O. Johnson, R. N. Watson, J. J. Morris, B. Jl. M'Kernan, J. G. Barnes, A. A. Cameron, J. W. Holley, D. W. Breen, J. Gerken, J. Shepherd, F. Sanders, W, H. Masters, J. A. Bond, and T. M. Brydone (hon. secretary). The secretary of the New Zealand Olympic and British Empire Games Association wrote advising the centre that communications must be sent through the proper channel —individuals to clubs, clubs to centres, centres to national associations, and national associations to the New Zealand Olympic Association. Ho asked the centre to forward its letter through the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, which was fully advised on the questions raised by the centre, which had asked for information as to the Olympic Association’s constitution, the principle upon which nominations were made by national associations and final selections made by the association, and also for a copy of the association’s balance sheet. He stated that the New Zealand A.A.A. had copies of the Olympic Association’s annual reports and statements of accounts, and he had no doubt that these would be supplied to it at its request. He would cheerfully enclose a copy, as the New Zealand Olympic Association had absolutely nothing to hide, but if ho did in the centre’s case he would have to do so in other cases, when they would leave themselves open to still more adverse criticism.

j. J. Everett applied for a transfer from Roslyn to Mornington.—The application was granted, subject to his clearance being in order. The record clerk (Mr R. N. Watson) reported that a revision of the points showed that Anglican had won the Barton Cup (for most points in relay handicaps) by one point from Civil Service. Messrs G. L. Tapley, R. Thompson, and K. Miller were appointed to represent the centre at the conference, convened by the swimming centre, to be held to-night, to consider the question of the constitution of the Olympic Games Association and the method of selection of teams.

The secretary of the Roslyn Club advised that the club had now disbanded. —lt was decided to write to the New Zealand Council pointing out that three clubs had gone out of existence this year as the result of the registration fees proving too heavy a drain upon their funds.

Mr J. Shepherd was appointed to represent the centre at the annual meeting of the Otago Athletic Clubs’ Protection Association. B. Hart (Lawrence) applied for reinstatement as an amateur, it being decided to forward the application to the New Zealand Council, with a favourable recommendation.

Reporting on behalf of the Harrier Sub-committee, Mr J. Gerken said that dates had been recommended as follow: —Clubs’ cross-country championships, August 8; Otago cross-country championship, August 15; Port Cha-I-mers-Dnnedin road race, September 5; modified marathon road race, September 1!). The recommendations were approved.

It was decided to make application for the use of the Otago Rowing Club’s pavilion for dances to he held on July 11 (the night of the Edmond Cup) and August 15 (the night of the Otago cross-country championship).

It was reported that the Otago Rugby Union had advised that permission could not be granted the centre to stage the one-mile handicap for the Ness Cup at any of the interprovincial Rugby matches. It was decided to make application for permission to hold the race on July 25. The Civil Service Club was granted permission to send a team to Christchurch to compete in the Kennett Cup steeplechase on June 13. It was decided to appoint the following sub-committee to go into ways and means of fostering the track and field side of the sport next summer, with a view to creating greater interest.— Messrs E. C. Isaacs, K. Miller, T.M. Brydono, G. L. Tapley B. R. M Kernan, R. Thompson, C. W. Clark, and W. H. Masters. The following were granted authority to wear Otago blazers: —W. Stark, JAllen, J.
