Nominations for the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s Winter Meeting close on Monday, May 11. at 9 p.m. Horses from George Price’s stable won £6.500 at the recent A.J.C. Meeting. Races won by M. • M’Carten totalled £9,575. Jumping at Riccarton. There was again some interesting jumping at Ricarton on Wednesday (says the ‘ Press ’). Royal Limond (I). O’Connor) and Rasouli (R. Beale) were companions in two rounds of the steeplechase country, in all 10 fences. Both did well. Rasouli especially gave a bright display, and showed more pace than his companion. It is very evident that big fences have no fear for the Australian-bred gelding, and his winter prospects bear a very bright outlook. Impressive Work. Palm (W. Rickerby). Monastic (A. Stove), and Lycidas (W. Rainbow) were associated over eight of the steeplechase obstacles. The two first named jumped exceptionally well until Pahu, after a clean effort over the first of the brush double, evaded the second. Lycidas, who was making his second attempt only over country, was kept a few lengths behind the other pair throughout, and his showing was full of promise. He did not make a serious mistake, and showed ability in getting away from his fences. All three were ridden well by young riders. who have had very little experience of the game, but appear likely to develop into proficient horsemen. Over Hurdles. Arctic Star (Beale) Jumped six hurdles in a faultless manner. He was accompanied over the first two and last two by Courtyard (Rainbow), who again shoped satisfactorily.

Haeretouu (Stove) had his first ex- . perience over four plain hurdles, and | gave a very pleasing exhibition. | For Waikato. Royal Limond, Jolly Beggar, and Glenavon are not due to leave Riccarton for the north until May 15, and will go to Hamilton for the Waikato meeting, and not to Waipa as stated previouslv. Rasouli and Arctic Star will race at Waipa after taking part in the Egmont and Marton fixtures. A Difficult Proposition, Thurina has made his reappearance at Riccarton, and is again under the care of Mrs J. Campbell. He looks very much in the rough, and one oi his legs, which was blistered during his holiday, bears a doubtful-looking appearance (says ‘The Press’). It is hoped, however, that he will be able to stand up to another preparation, as steeplechasers of his calibre are not very plentiful these days. Gross-country Candidate. Free Air is expected to rejoin the active brigade at Riccarton soon. She had a recent set-back owing to an escapade on a concrete road at New Brighton. but is considered sound again. In all probability she will be ridden during the winter by the stable apprentice. H. Kearns. A Beneficial Trip. Silver Ring is to be kept going in light work during the winter at Greymouth with a view to another trip to Sydney about July. In the opinion of A. E. Ellis, Silver Bing was in better health when he arrived at Lyttelton on Tuesday .morning than when he left Riccarton for Sydney last month. Ellis considers that the horse has only to keep in his present order to secure high honours again in weight-for-age races in Australia in the spring.

Why He Did Not Run Again. Surprise was expressed that Loud Applause did not race at the A.J.C. meeting subsequent to his good showing in the Sydney Cup. Unfortunately he was bitten by a spider or something else while in his stable, and his hind legs swelled tremendously. As he also developed a temperature, further racing for him was out of the question. In Both Northerns.

Of the horses entered for the Great Northerns, no fewer than 19 include thj dual engagement. They are Master Musk, Woodrul, Manawatu, Imperial Prince. Golden England, Rasouli, Royal Limond. Spalpiko, Scotch Nation, Valpecn, Thespis, Diamond, Roxy, King’s Archer. Booklaw, Wee Pat, London, Indolent, and Pahu.

Increased Entries. Nominations for the six leading events at the Auckland Racing Club’s Winter Meeting, to be held at Ellerslie on May 30, June 3 and 6, total 247, and show an increase of 20 above last year. For the second year in succession the Great Northern Hurdles has attracted 37 entrants, and the Great Northern Steeplechase has drawn 37, as against 26 last season. The Winter Steeplechase candidates number 37, compared with 26 last year. The fields for the Cornwall Handicap and the King George Handicap show a slight falling off, from 36 to 34, and from 51 to 46 respectively. There are 56 in the York Handicap, as against 48 last year.

“ Cannot Carry Them Home.” During his stay in Sydney K. Voitre rode at several meetings, but his many mounts returned only one win. “ What’s the matter with Voitre Y” f heard queried on all sides (says “Pilot”). Nothing, I should say. apart from the fact that he was on horses not good enough to win, and 1 have yet to sec jockeys able to “ carry them homo.” No matter how capable a rider may bo, he is hound to strike a run of “ outs ” at some time nr other, and, when that happens you invariably hear the never could ride ” opinion expressed by some critics.. If Voitre had remained in Sydney longer and met with no

better success than recently, that would have been said of him, notwithstanding his brilliant deeds of the past year. Even those owners and trainers who run after successful jockeys would have cooled to him. Sydney Cup Dividend Error, A strange coincidence led to an error being made in the calculation of the dividend on Contact, winner of the Sydney Cup. Two officials, working separately, made an identical error, their calculations making the return 4s less per ticket than the proper price. The error was not discovered until some time later, when the ordinary Process of balancing was proceeded with, by which time all dividends on the race had been paid. Mr L. L. Raymond, who is m charge of the totahsntor staffs at Randwick, said that as it was impossible to establish the identity of purchasers of tickets on Contact, the only course available to his company, Automatic Totalisators Ltd., was to pay the amount of the difference—a little more than £2oo—to the revenue of the State. In the experience of the company in the last 18 years there had only been one other case of error.

TROTTING HEWS Trotted Brilliantly. The heavy going at Forbury yesterday suited Great Wood, who trotted so brilliantly that under silmiar conditions to-morrow he must be regarded as a certainty to run into a place. Great Wood’s Owner. Great Wood is owned by Mr A. F. C. Rushton, whose Ohjnemutu was responsible for returning a sensational dividend on tlie West Coast about two years ago. Should Improve. Calm Queen trotted at a solid gait throughout the Bayfield Handicap yesterday, but could not foot it with Great Wood over the final furlong. The race should improve Calm Queen. A Smart Colt. The Waimate sportsman. Mr W. TLowe, has a smart Jack Potts colt m Lucky Jack, who scored an impressive win in the Domain Handicap yesterday. He began quickly and accompanied Glorietta, in the lead over .the first mile, then he shot to the front and won easily. Good Patrons. Owners of trotting horses are good patrons of the New Zealand Railways, and on the special train which brought the Canterbury contingent of horses to Dunedin for the Forbury Park meeting now fewer than 70 were taken. Each horse would have one attendant, and special vans were set aside for the carriage of sulkies and other gear. Diversion. Although R. B. Berry scored a comfortable win with Lucky Jack in the Domain Handicap, he was fortunate that Diversion put in a bad break. Both, however, arc smart three-year-olds that should win more races in the future. Shr Id Not Be Forgotten. Greenmantle lost every chance he had of finishing in a place in the mile event yesterday through breaking shortly lifter the start. He should not bo overlooked to-morrow, because he appeared in good condition and he is a pacy sprinter. Hot Favourite Breaks, Big Author was strongly backed in the Renown Handicap yesterday, but failed to leave the mark and It A all chance of finishing even in a place. The Author Dillon gelding has done well since he was taken in hand by O. K. Hooper, and he should obtain more successes in the future. Silver Guy’s Prospects. Silver Guy, one of the acceptors for the Southland Handicap at Forbury to-morrow, is a five-year-old gelding by
