KENNEL NOTES

Owners are reminded that entries for the North Otago Club’s Show close on May 6 with the secretary, Mr W. Atkinson, Thames street, Oamaru. , A great list of specials and cups and the guarantee of a jolly .couple of days together with a pleasant social function on the first night of the show, should attract, as usual, a large number of exhibitors and visitors. The two good judges appointed. Dr A. C. M’Kiliop and Mr W. C. Leversedge, both of Christchurch, should also be considerable factors in drawing the large entry the club expects to get. The club has reverted to Friday and Saturday as its show days, Thursday and Friday apparently not being so successful, the actual dates this year being May 22 and 23. The kennel section of the Fanciers’ Club has, so far, this year proved so popular that it is anticipated that the 193 S show will exceed, in size and provision. anything before attempted in Dunedin. Since the old club vacated the downhill path for the uphill one, everything has gone well with it, and the old saw that “ nothing succeeds like success ” will be amply proven when show day comes round. The rumours that exhibitors at the June show will be excluded from any future show that may be held in Dunedin are, of course, to be treated with the contempt they deserve, as the Dunedin Fanciers’ Club, under whoso control the present kennel section works, is a correctly affiliated body, and entitled as such to hold a championship show annually, at which all owners and breeders are invited to exhibit and to compete for the special prizes, all of which, with the exception of the breed :rs’ trophy, are open to allcomers. Something quite new for southern clubs will he attempted this year, this being a special prize of £lO 10s for best of all breeds, and several other large money prizes.

Some of the more important wins at the Sydney Royal are as under:— Best in show, Mr G. Packer’s (Brisbane) Brian of Halcana, an imported Irish setter. Brian is only two years old, and is one of the finest red setters seen for many years, and he won (in his breed) from a record entry, his win for premier dog being also from a record entry. Best Irish setter bitch was another “ beauty,” being the Victorianowned Lavinia of Writtle, winner of the championship at the last Melbourne Royal. Mr G. Niddrie is her lucky owner. Best wire-haired fox terrier and runner-up to the Irish setter, for best in show, was Mr 6. F, Wilson’s Dipiano Renard (imp.), while Mr F. W. F. Ball’s Gd. ch. Pastime Supreme was the winning bitch. In the wire classes Mrs Wall, from New Zealand, although not winning the premier awards, more than held her own. In puppy (under 12 months) this owner’s Mahaki the Toff won first place, while in Australianbred, a big class, he was v.h.c., beating, among others, F. Hilton’s Gd. ch. Solace Sceptre. In the open class Mrs Wall’s Bowes Bindle (imp.) was beaten by Diplane Renard (imp.).

In smooth fox terriers an entry of 160 individual dogs constituted a world’s record for the breed, every State in Australia being represented. The best of them all was an outstanding young dog, Mrs E. M. Clift's Jack of Orange, while from this section camo the best female in the show, W. S. Long’s black-and-white bitch, Sarbo Sybil. Best smooth puppy, dog or bitch, Mr E. R. Organ’s Oxon Opinion. The winning Airedale this year was the old stager, Gd. Ch. Stoueleigh Solario, belonging to Mr W. 11. Brilliant. In Scottish terriers another imported dog came to the fore. This was Mr F. D. David's (Queensland) Rosehall Standard. The best rough-coated collie dog was T. Marshall’s Thackaringa Bruce, ami bitch, D. S. Newall’s Souvenir Gay Princess. In cockers, Mrs M'Cullougli’s veteran Ch. Alloma Invader, looking very fit. won the challenge. In this breed Major J. P. Thorn’s great little winner, Gd. ch. Renwick Gleam of Pcnscroft, was beaten by another New Zealand-bred bitch in Twinkle of Penscroft, belonging to Mr J. Ure Smith, in Irish terriers the winning puppy, Mr J. W. Attwill’s Willray Winalot, beat the open class dogs and collared the challenge, the next best being W. F. Williams’s Kilkenny OTlafferty. In the bitches the winner of the limit class, v ii ‘ < ’ ones ’ s Kaloni Deidre, won the challenge from G. Anderson’s Ch, Brendon Rosemary. In the toy section, the Adelaide dog, Ch. Red House Cock Kobiii. au imported miniature pom belonging to Mrs J. M. Helpman, was made premier winner.

. :' lr H - Hmdiciiff, of Wellington, is to jnclge the Ashburton Fanciers’ Club show on June 19 and 20. This judge is becoming quite well known to southern owners, and is apparently as popular with us as with North Island exhibitors.

Mr S. Lawson, of North-east Valley has a very even litter of Irish setters in his kennels, There were originally ten, four of them being dogs, but the majority of the females will not be peisci ered with. These youngsters are very well bred, being by Redstone Uan aka (ch. Redstone Tata—R. Springfield) from Kerry Patricia (ch. Tara of Trashna—Kerry Chance).

Mrs Bracks has disposed of the remaining West Highland white terrier dog puppy from eh. Lochie'l Lady Rosslyn’s last litter. This little fellow has gone to Mr C. M. Beckley, of Timaru, thus joining two sisters from an earlier litter which are already in the South Canterbury town.

Mr G. Donaldson, the Oama.ru Club’s popular president, has some very promising young collies on hand, one or two of which he intends reserving for this season show activities. Altogether he has three dogs and one bitchT now about five or six months old and beginning to shape very well. The sire is Mr Leckie’s ch. Rajah of Lochiel, one of the best of his kind in the country, and the dam is Judith of Selkirk, a bitch bred in Hawke’s Bay from Jlosyth Reflection, an Australia product, and E'lmsley Model, a bitch who owns ns dam Lochiel Juanita, three-quarter sister to Rajah. Mr Donaldson, to give himself more time to attend to the dogs he wises to show on his own account, will be pleased to dispose of two of the young dogs.

At the big show held by the Sunshine Club in Melbourne Mr J. M. Wilkins’s wire-haired fox terrier, gd. ch. Mahaki Gallant Gesture, won in a good class, although he was closely pressed by eh. Ryburn Ringleader. Both these dogs are New Zealand-bred, and the former is the sire of a nice litter bred by the Leithval Kennel owners from eli. Kidlet of Bisto (imp.) some time ago. In Scotties, at the same show, Mr A. A. White carried off all the honours as has become his custom, although his Strathclyde The Laird, somewhat surprisingly, was put in third place in the open, second being CraigoMachie Angus, although both wore well behind that grand flog ch. Heather Guardsman (imp,), also Mr White's property. The same mvnr's ch. Svrathclviic; Wakeful won in
