The House met at 2.30 p.m. Mr Robertson and Mr Tan Henare were cadi granted three days’ leave of absence on account of sickness. The Speaker announced that a poll had been taken on the question whether liquor should be sold within the precincts of Parliament Buildings during the present Parliament. In the Legislative Council the voting was 32 in favour of the sale and three against;" in the House of Representatives 02 voted for and 15 against. The House proceeded to discuss written answers to questions, and after that resumed the second reading of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill. Mr Hultquist said it had been said the onus to show that a 40-hour week was practicable should be on the employee, but the employee did not control the industry, and therefore the onus should be on the employer to show that a 40-hour week was impracticable. He contended that the time was ripe for a shorter working week. Mr Bodkin denied the statements made by Dr M‘Mil lan that the last Government’s policy had produced malnutrition among the mothers of New Zealand. The debate was adjourned.
