DOMINION JUNIORS OUTCLASSED FAILURE TO STRIKE FORM Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, March 1. Failing in some instances to strike real form, the New Zealand junior tennis representatives -were outclassed by New South Wales players in a series of matches played at the White City courts. The New Zealanders won only one game. Surprisingly inadequate arrangements had been made by the Tennis Association, while the small attendance and the heavy courts due to overnight thunderstorms were factors not conducive to a good # display. No umpires had been provided, and spectators volunteered, but in two instances the boys umpired and scored themselves until volunteers came to the rescue. ' The games were more evenly contested than the scores indicate. The value of early, coaching was demonstrated in the home team's knowledge of the liner points. " Beaten but not disgraced ". was the opinion formed by onlookers regarding the New Zealanders' display. The visitors showed up better in the doubles. Bedford failed to reveal his true form against Bromwich, though by' a clever variation of play in the second set, when he discarded his long-driving game, he rallied splendidly. Partnered by Guhn in the doubles, his placements were clever and his net play and volleying sound. Gunn's forehand shots were a feature of his play all day. The latter was most impressive in the singles. Most of the New Zealanders revealed a disinclination to visit the net, and. while their base-line play was sound the better stroke-making and superior placing of the local players triumphed. The 14-year-old New Zealander Painter gave flashes of read tennis ability and evidence of great promise. Henry Marsh, the tennis writer for the ' Sun,' says: " Although Bromwich and Huxley outclassed their New Zealand opponents, this was expected, for the former won every junior event of consequence in Australia in the pass two years. Pattinson almost broke even with Lindo in the second set of their singles. Lindo ranked as third among Australian juniors. The Aucklander Gunn gave Gilchrist a hard match, and in the doubles with Bedford played easily the best game of four against Lindo and Gilchrist.
