ST. CLAIR CARNIVAL

URGE CROWDS ATTEND Despite the wet weather large crowds attended the annual carnival of the St. Clair Improvement Association both on Saturday afternoon and evening, and brisk business was done at the various stalls and side-shows. Visitors in the afternoon derived considerable amusement from the children’s treasure hunt on the beach, a sand modelling competition, and tricycle races, One enterprising youngster employed his fox terrier to help him in the search for the treasure, and another lad made the unexpected find of an envelope containing a receipt for 17s and the sum of 3s, which he returned to the treasurer’s office. . In the evening Flying-officer Campbell gave a spectacular exhibition of flying within view of the Esplanade, which was lined by a crowd of many hundreds. Repeating the “ rescue which was a feature of the opening night of the carnival, he roared low over the heads of the crowd and new out towards White Island, located the “ lost ” boat, and dropped parachutes giving the direction of the derelict and the route to be taken by the rescuers. Another attraction was a well-staged march past by four teams from the St. Kilda and St. Clair Life Saving Clubs and an exhibition of rescue work by the St. Clair junior team that was successful in winning at the recent Dominion championships. The surf was again brilliantly illuminated by floodlights, their glistening rays on the sand and sea creating an effect which was greatlv admired. The Otago Regimental Band contributed an enjoyable musical* programme, and all the time the crowd, entering into the spirit of the occasion, freely patronised the stalls and games. The financial returns of the carnival are reported to have been very satisfactory.
