RUGBY TRIAL MATCHES PREJUDICIAL TO LOCAL GAMES IPk« United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 28. The annual report of the Wellington Rugby Union states that the local season started auspiciously and up to the end of the first round of the senior championship the football was of a good standard. Trial matches for the selection of the New Zealand team were played in the week following the end of the first round, and from then onwards interest in club fixtures fell away and the form of the players suffered a lapse. The attendances declined and this was reflected in the gate receipts, which were slightly below those of 1.934. This feature is noticeable, states the report, whenever a series of trial matches is played throughout New Zealand, culminating with final trials in Wellington, and it would appear that, having worked up to a climax, with the Dominion’s best talent available in the final gapies, the public thereafter loses interest and does not patronise club and interprovincial matches to the same extent as in normal years. SCULLING PEARCE AGAIN BEATS TURNER Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, February 28. Cecil Pearce, the New South Wales sculling champion, again defeated Herb Turner the Australian champion today. The contest was a team race over 2,000 metres, ordered by the Australian selectors as a guide to Olympic representation. Miss Rie Mastenbroek, in winning the 100 metres back stroke in 75 4-ssec, broke Eleanor Holm’s world record. Willy Den Ouden reduced by onefifth of a second her own women’s world record for 100 metres free style, which sh'e previously held at 64 4-ssec. The ‘ Daily Telegraph ’ says that not the least among Bradman’s feats is South Australia’s winning the Sheffield Shield in the first year of his captaincy. It augurs well for Australia’s chances when the time comes for him to assume the leadership. Badcock is likelv to be a thorn in the side of the English bowlers for many years.

ENCOURAGING YOUNG ATHLETES . JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS PROPOSED CONFERENCE AFFIRMS PRINCIPLE The desirability of including junior events on the New Zealund track and field championship programme was alfirmed by the annual conference of delegates from the centres of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association last night, but delegates generally expressed the view that there wpuld be considerable difficulty in putting the proposal, into effect. On behalf of the Auckland Centre, Mr R. Cameron moved that the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association reconsider the inclusion of junior events in the New Zealand national championship programme, or that a junior national championship meeting be held once a year. He said that it was felt a groat deal of young talent was being lost to athletics in New Zealand by the lack of junior competition. In submitting the remit Auckland was guided by the fact that in swimming intermediate and junior championships were held. This got over the transition period between intermediate and senior status, and if means could be devised to carry young athletes along in the intermediate years it would be for the good of the sport. Mr P. Lindsay (Auckland) seconded the remit. . Mr A. C. Kitto (Wellington) said that his centre had advocated the idea for years as a good one. Junior events had" been included on the New Zealand championship programme at Dunedin on one occasion, but it was dropped because of the poor support from other centres. Wellington had sent down one boy and the others were all local competitors. Unfortunately, the question of expense entered into the matter. Mr A. Hughes said that Canterbury was in favour of the proposal, but realised the difficulties in regard to finance.

Mr F. M. Reid, the Otago delegate on the Now Zealand Council, said that the question had been gone into years ago, and it was found that the expense proved an obstacle. The difficulty was got over by including events on the provincial championship programmes. Mr T. M. Br.vdone said that Otago would support the remit as the matter would have to be considered by the council. It might bo possible to conduct the event as part of the New Zealand championship meeting. The remit was carried.
