The following prisoners were sentenced in the Supremo Court by Mr Justice Northcroft:— James Carter, aged 25, 18 months’ reformative detention for indecent assault on a girl aged 11 at Reeftou; Norman Walter Jones, aged 42, married, an accountant, for theft of £1,327 as a servant of Duncan M‘Lean Ltd., Greymouth, reformative detention not exceeding two years; Harry Infield Hodgson, aged 59, single, a waterside worker of Westport, two years’ probation for attempted indecent assault on another male at Westport; William James Morris, aged 56, single, two years’ hard labour for false pretences involving £213 of the Unemployment Board’s funds in connection with the subsidy for the construction of a hostel at the Maruia Hot Springs, Keefton; Catherine Ann Morns, aged 54, single, who was involved hi the same offence, two years' probation, the judge describing her as a catspaw for her brother. _ . In a civil action, Freda Hill, widow, of Westport, was awarded £1,450 damages against Shaw’s taxi service, Westport, and Thomas Patrick Shaw, taxi driver, of Westport. On a claim for £3,500 at the original hearing the widow was awarded £1,750, but on the defendants appealing a rehearing was granted by the Appeal Court for a review. of the damages, which, as a result of to-day’s decision, have been reduced by £3OO. The Court of Appeal found there was negligence on the part of the defendants.
