TAPESTRY AGAIN
The tapestry Revival which is' now flourishing has come about through the growing interest in original needlework. The comeback of “ petit point ” and other lovely handwork has had its effect on tapestry, so that pictures, screens, and Aubusson carpets are coming into their own in homes that are fortunate enough to be able to afford them. A special exhibition in Paris recently of Aubusson tapestry ranged from the sixteenth century ,to the present day. It was in the eighteenth century that vivid colour and magnificent design made Aubusson more like pictures than tapestry, and, so far, it is the earlier work which present fashion tries to emulate Of the seventeenth-century w, the chair seats are the most attractive examples, and these are copied by to-day’s “ petit point ” devotees.
