TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council was held at Mosgiel yesterday. Cr C. Fir " y presided. REPORTS. The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts amounting to £2,913 14s. —Adopted. The Ranger reported having impounded 30 head of cattle during the month. —Noted. Mr J ohn Garrett, inspector of works, reported on the work carried out in the various ridings during the month ended on February 15: — East Taieri Riding.—Cemetery, Gladstone, Centre, and Riccarton roads have been graded with the power grader. The old Silyerstream bed has been cleared of debris and willows from the Taieri River to Mill Creek. The deck of the bridge at the school has been repaired. North Taieri Riding.—Halfway Bush to Whare Flat and Rudd’s roads have been surfaced. Maintenance metal has been run out on Rudd’s road, and 110yds of maintenance gravel from Milner’s pit have been run out on the Wingatui road-Highway No. 7. Kaikorai Riding.—Kaikorai Valley and Sidey’s roads have been graded with the power grader, and roads have been surfaced.

Otokia Riding.—Two hundred and fifty yards of me.tal have been run out from Jaffray’s quarry, Saddle Hill, to Mrs Callender’s road at Scrogg’s Hill, Saddle Hill, Otokia-Kuri Bush roads have been surfaced.

Outrain Riding.—The running out of the gravel on Kirk’s drain road is in progress. Maintenance gravel has been run out on Grey street, Allanton-High-way No. 8. The decks of the bridges on Cray’s and D. : Millar’s roads have been repaired. Maungatua Riding.—Spencer’s and Clegg’s roads have been graded with the power grader. The following roads have been surfaced:—Otokia-Maunga-tua, B drain, and Allanton to Berwick. Deep Stream Riding.—The following roads have been surfaced:—Lamb Hill, Hindon to Lee, and Hindon Railway. The new metal at Machine Creek has been blinded and water tables cleaned out. Maintenance gravel has been run out on the Clarks to Rock and Pillar road at Deep Stream in conjunction with the City Corporation. Strath Taieri 'Riding.—The widening of the road to M‘Rae’s under Government grant has been completed. Tenders were’ called for the gravelling of the Bald Hill road under Government grant. Three tenders were received, and the lowest, that of J. C. Mowat, was submitted to the Public Works Department for approval. The breaking of the schist metal on Sare’s road has been completed. Tentative proposals for the following Government grants have been submitted to the Public Works Department : —Strath Taieri Ridin„ : Gravelling the road from the Six-mile to Rock and Pillar. Deep Stream Riding: Gravelling the worst portions of the road from Lee Stream to Boyd’s. Tentative highway estimates for the ensuing year have also been submitted to the board’s representative. MAIN HIGHWAYS. No 2.—Contract No. 70: The supply and delivery of I,6ooyds of maintenance gravel on the section from Lee Stream to Shannon is in progress, and if the weather permits should bo finished by 'the end of this month. The concrete culvert at Sutton has been completed and is open for traffic. The decks of the small water openings from Sutton to Mlddlomarch have been repaired. The road has also been graded from Mosgiel to Sutton. No. 8: Eighty yards of gravel from Milner’s pit have been run out on the hill section and the road graded. No. 4; The road has been graded and water tables have been cleaned out. No. 5: The road has been graded with the power grader- from Green Island Borough to Brighton. No. 6: The road has been surfaced and the deck of the bridge repaired at Fletcher’s. The report was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. The Official Secretary to His Excellency' the Governor-General acknowledged the message of sympathy on behalf of the people of the County of Taieri in connection with the death of King George V.—Received. The representatives of the Main Highways Board notified that Allanton-Out-ram road and Gladstone-North Taieri roads had been declared main highways, and enclosed an extract from the ‘ Gazette ’ regarding the same.—Received. i

The District Engineer of the Public Works Department forwarded a letter concerning Milner’s gravel pit.—Received.

The District Engineer, Public Works Department, forwarded forms for tentative proposals for Government grants and highways expenditure.—Received. The New Zealand Counties’ Association forwarded circulars (1) prohibiting stock traffic on roads and highways; (2) subsidy on rates; (3) hospital rating; (4) liealth insurance.—Noted. Mr T. S. Beadle, Flagstaff, wrote again asking for metal for his road.— The owner of the adjoining property to be asked to clear the gorse, Mr H. V. Smith drew attention to the corrugated state of the surface of Gladstone road.—The road to be tarsealed in the near future.

Mr John M'Fadzien,, Henley, complained of an unsafe bridge over Duck Creek on the road at Henry Horne’s. — The inspector was instructed to have the bridge strengthened. The Minister for Defence advised that for military purposes it was essential that the gravel pit on run 600 should be filled in and that steps were being taken in that direction. —Received.

Mr C. O. Flamank asked that the new , road deviation to his place be graded in.—The inspector stated that it was intended, to put this work in hand very shortly, and it was decided to advise the writer accordingly. Mr R. Kidd, Sutton, notified that the water race through Gladbrook and diverted on to the road was causing damage, keeping the road flooded and impassable for school children in wet weather.—Resolved to write to the owner of a private race to have the water controlled.

The Chief Postmaster, Dunedin, referring to the Middlemarch rural delivery, asked if the coupcil intended taking any action before winter with regard to gravelling the road between Burnet Bros.’ and Tisdall’s properties. —lt was decided to reply, pointing out that the road was used only by the mail contractor, and that the council would consider gravelling it provided the department would make a grant towards the cost.

Mr Algx. M'Kinnon and others, Micldlemarch, wrote suggesting that the present highways declaration be revoked and the top road declared the highway. This road, from Sixmile to Rock and Pillar, needed gravelling.—lt was decided to reply that as soon as finance was available the road would be put in good order, and that

in the meantime the council did not deem it advisable to make application to have it declared a highway. A letter was received from Mrs M. Gibb, asking that repairs be effected to Breakneck road, Saddle Hill.—The matter was held over in the meantime. GENERAL. The tender of Mr J. C. Mowat for gravelling 1120 chains of the Bald HillHummock Runs road was accepted, the price of the gravel being 2s 9d per yard from Nenthorn Creek and 5s Gd per yard from Longford.
