FILL SPACES IN THE ROCK GARDEN

After the dry summer there are vacancies in the rock garden that should bo filled (writes a correspondent of ‘ Popular Gardening,’ London). Thrift, Aubrietia and Saxifrages are some of the plants that have suffered, and if it is not intended to renew them before spring, opportunity should be taken to plant now small bulbs such as Scilla, Chionodoxas, or Glory of the Snow, ■Snowdrop and Crocus, which may be left and will not interfere with the planting of spring and summer flowering plants. Where the bulbs are to be put, work into the soil a little leaf mould or rotted manure and, if possible, plant those sorts that will come up year after year, requiring practically no attention. I know of a clump of Chionodoxas in a rock garden pocket which has occupied the same position for twenty yeax-s and the flowers have always given pleasure every spring.
