Waipiata is due from Bluff to-morrow morning. She will sail late on Monday for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Auckland. Holmglen was due this afternoon from Wellington, and will sail on Monday for Timaru and Lyttelton to complete loading for Wellington, New Plymouth, and P.ort Waikato. Storm is due to-morrow from Bluff, and will sail on Monday for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Picton, and Wanganui. Wainui is due on Monday from Lyttelton, and will sail on Tuesday afternoon for Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne, via ports. Rata was expected to leave Westport to-day for Timaru, Oamaru, and Dunedin to discharge coal. Passengers and mail for the south connected with the express. HERTFORD FOR NEW PLYMOUTH. The Hertford was expected to leave Port Chalmers this afternoon for New P.lymouth direct. NARBADA FOB INDIA. The Narbada, after completing an overhaul at Port Chalmers, came Up to Dunedin last evening to load for Newcastle, Rangoon, and Calcutta. She is expected to sail at 9 a.m. to-morrow. Niagara” leaves Vancouver. The C.A, liner Niagara left Vancouver on Wednesday for Honolulu, Suva, Auckland, and Sydney. She is due at Auckland on March' 16. WANGANELLA’S DEPARTURE. Messrs Neill and Co. advise that the sailing of the Wanganella, which wasdue to leave Auckland for Sydney today, has been postponed. She will now sail on Monday, at 3 p.m. CANADIAN CRUISER IN PORT. The Canadian National steamer Canadian Cruiser arrived yesterday afternoon from Halifax via Australian ports and Bluff. She is discharging Canadian cargo and loading products. The vessel was to sail this afternoon for Lyttelton, Wellington, Napier, and Wanganui to complete loading. She will sail finally from Wanganui roadstead about March 9 for New York, Boston, and Halifax.

Rob Roy, two-year-old half-brother by Night Raid, to Homer, had his first race recently at Warwick Farm. He is a well-grown youngster (says “Pilot”), but, though in his work he had shown pace, he was unequal to showing up in the first division of the Nursery Handicap. The late Mr L. K. S. Mackinnon bought him for 1,450 gs in New Zealand and I. Foulsham has him on lease until September 16 of this year. Unless there is an extension of lease, that means Rob Roy will not carry his trainer’s colours in either Derby. Reta Peter, the only mare to twice win the New Zealand Cup, was destroyed last week after having broken a blood vessel. She was bred by Mr F. H. Robson, in whose colours she did all her racing. In 192 U she won the New Zealand Cup in the manner of a champion, and in the following year she finished second to Sherwood, who was disqualified for crossing. She did her racing under the care of A. G. Wilson, who drove her in both races for the Cup. Reta Peter was one of the best trotters ever raced in New Zealand, but like so many great race mares, she did not make a name for herself at tiie stud. The best of her progeny was Peter Locanda, who at his best was above the average.

WAIKOUAITI WITH TRANSHIPMENTS. The Waikouaiti left Sydney at 9 a.in. on Thursday with transhipments ex the following vessels, the Orontes, Tudor, Mellore, Marella, Kamo Maru, Esquilino, Hobson’s Bay, Orion, and Triton. CHIFUKU MARU SAILS. The Japanese steamer Chifuku Maru, having discharged a quantity of cargo from Japan, left Dunedin yesterday for Timaru and Wellington to load scrap metal for Japan. MONOWAI FOR WELLINGTON, The Monowai left Sydney yesterday for Wellington and Auckland. She is due at Wellington on Monday afternoon and at Auckland on March 5. She is scheduled to leave Auckland for Sydney on March 6. WAIRUNA LEAVES LOS ANGELES. Cabled advice has been received by the Union Company that the Wairuna, from Vancouver, cleared Los Angeles at 11 a.m. on February 21 for Auckland, Napier, Wellington. Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Australia. She is due at Auckland on March 18. 11IGMOR FROM BLACK SEA. With bulk motor spirit for the Associated Motorists Petrol Company, the tanker Rigmor is reported to have left the Black Sea on February 9. She is due at Auckland about the end of March. PORT HUNTER CLEARS BALBOA. Cabled advice has been received by the Port Line that the Port Hunter, en route from Glasgow to New Zealand in ballast, cleared Balboa on Tuesday morning. She is due at Auckland on May 17 and at Melbourne on May 24. P. AND 0. COMMAND CHANGES. Captain E. A. J. W. Carter, R.N.R., who commanded the P. and O. liner Strathaird when that ship made her first visit to Wellington at the end of 1934, is now in command of the Mooltan, to which he transferred last month from the Ranpura. Captain Carter was born at St. Peter’s Port, Jersey, was in H.M.S. Worcester, training ship, from 1898 to 1900, sewed his apprenticeship in the sailing ships Glendore and Lawhill, and in the s.s. Ottawa from 1900 to 1903.

He joined the P. and 0. service as fifth officer in the Peshawur in 1905, and on the outbreak of war went to the navy, and was on war service up to 1918. After the war he returned to the P. and 0. service, and it was as the result of several transfers of commands consequent upon the retirement of Captain Sudell, commander of the Strathmore, that Captain Carter was appointed to the Mooltan in January, 193 G. He has commanded or been staff commander in a number of the company's vessels, including the Kh.ybcr,

the Maloja, Allport, Strathaird, and Stratlmaver. With his long experience in the P. and O. Line, Captain Carter is well known to a large number of the travelling public, and has many friends in the ports of the Eastern, Ear Eastern, and Australian run. Captain J. M. Legg, who has taken command of the Ranpura, is a native of Kent. He served u four years’ apprenticeship in the famous sailing ship Port Jackson, and had a year in steam in the Ayrshire. He joined the P. and 0. Company as fifth officer of the Plassy in 1900. Captain Lcgg is another commander well known on the Eastern and Austra-

lian run, his last vessel having been the Mantua, which he commanded from March, 1933, until she was sold to be broken np last November.
