BOYS' TEAM IN AUSTRALIA ALLEGATION AGAINST SPORTS DEALERS [Per United Press Association.] v WELLINGTON, February 27. Criticism was levelled at the Man* agement Committee of the New Zea«land Lawn Tennis Association ,at a council meeting of the association at the omission to send a manager to Aus-i tralia with the junior team now in Sydney preparing to take part in the New? South Wales junior championships. Mr G. A. Pownall contended i/lat the team should have had an adult man** ager with it. , ' ' Mr A. G. Henderson, chairman of the Management Committee, agreed that it would have been preferable to send .a manager, but the expense would have been considerable and the committee had asked Mr Henry Marsh, a great friend to New,Zealand tennis, to look after the boys. The committee had, arranged to billet them at the Y.M.C.A. . ' The council proceeded to discuss in committee -an allegation that certain sports goods dealers were “ getting at ■ certain members of the team to prevail upon them to use only certain tennis material which would be made available to them in sufficient quantities while they were in Australia. ‘ It was decided to ask the ment Committee to investigate the mat. ter and report to the council at its next quarterly meeting. • Mr F. P. Walker remarked that some of the boys had been imposed on by some people in the sports trade and told that they would not be able to get any practice in Australia even witn their own colleagues unless they used, certain sporting material. Professor F. P. Wilson, Dominion president of the association, asked whether strict distinction between tenuis professionals and amateurs could not lie broken down. He could s ® e J lo valid reason for maintenance of the distinction, and considered it might be a good thing for the association to be the first to hold an open championship tournament as was done in golf.
