CRIPPLED CHILDREN

LOCAL SOCIETY'S ACTIVITIES In accordance with the programme outlined at the conference of affiliated bodies, held in Wellington, in July last, the activities of tlie local, society have been devoted to making a list of cases of crippled children in the Otago district. This has now been partially compiled, and was considered at a meeting of the Case Committee last" week. The co-operation of the medical profession has been readily given, and the various hospital districts have likewise promised collaboration and help. Arrangements have been made to send a number of selected cases to Central Otago for recuperation, and it is hoped to extend this phase of the society’s work as conditions allow. _At a meeting of the executive on Tuesday evening a general review of the situation was made, and satisfaction expressed at the progress so far made. It was felt that the next step should be to secure the services of a suitable person to act as supervisor of the cases in conjunction with the committee and medical men. When this position has been filled a further review of the situation will be made, and following this an idea of the money required can be arrived at, and the deferred public appeal will be completed. In this connection it may be mentioned that the unique exhibition known as “ Titania’s Palace” will shortly visit Dunedin. As a result of its showing in Auckland the funds of the Crippled Children Society there profited to the extent of approximately £6OO. It is hoped that equal success will attend the presence or the Palace in Dunedin. It may be mentioned that, by making use of the hospital and other established means of dealing with the children, the cost of the scheme for relieving their sufferings and for restoring them to normal health will be kept well within bounds, but the executive of the society is anxious to explore the situation thoroughly before setting the full scheme into operation.
