A recommendation by the Game Committee that the Department of Internal Affairs be advised that the society favoured an open season for opossums this year for two months from noon on July 1, the same as last year, was adopted. _ . In reply to an application received by the Department of Internal Affairs from J. Thwaites. of Tokanui, for permission to retain in captivity twoi' live opossums, it was decided to state that from the ..society’s experience recently it considered it inadvisable that a permit be granted. The Game Commitee reported having received correspondence from the Grey District Society and Mr L. O. H. Tripp, president of the New Zealand Acclimatisation ■ Societies’ Association, in regard to opossum revenue. —It was decided to support the Grey District Society in its efforts to obtain a fair share of the revenue. It was also decided that an approximate estimate of the society’s expenses for ranging, office work, etc., in connection with opossums for a period of some years be sent to the following:—Mr Tripp, the Minister of Internal Affairs, local members of Parliament, and to other acclimatisation societies that receive opossum revenue.
Mr J. Maconie, on behalf of the Research Committee, reported that tests conducted over a period of years proved conclusively that trout liberated in the Tomahawk Lagoon failed to flourish as they should do under normal conditions.—lt was agreed that the Angling Committee report on the subject at the next meeting. The Angling Committee recommended that 500 Scotch burn fingerlings be put in Paget’s dam, above the golf links at Alexandra; that the Upper Clutha Anglers’ Association be asked for an opinion as to whether the fishing season over all the local district should not open on October 1 and close on April 30; that Messrs Maconie, Barratt, and Murdoch be thanked for assistance on the Silverstream in netting young trout; that the ranger investigate the complaint from the Mataura Angling Club concerning the dirty state of the Mataura River ; that some rainbow trout be collected and held in the ponds at Waitati; and that the Public Works Department be asked to tighten up the regulations regarding the control of dynamite at public works camps.—The recommendations were adopted.
