OBITUARY

MR S. HUTTON Additional information has been received concerning the death at Bombay recently of Mr S’Sendalg Hutton, chief engineer of the s.s. Binfield, or the British India Steam Navigation Ltd. He was born in Dunedin in 1882, and educated at the Arthur Street and Otago, Boys’ High Schools, also being a student at the School of Art, of which his father was principal. His apprenticeship as an engineer was served at the Dunedin Engineering Company Ltd. and Messrs Stewart and Outram’s before be left for Glasgow to be engaged in turn .by Messrs G. and J. Weir and Messrs William Baird Nore and Co. Ltd. His engineering certificate completed, he joined the company, which he served until his'death. All through the war he was aboard troopships, and was among those rescued _ when the s.s. Itonus was torpedoed in the Mediterranean. This long period greatly undermined his health, but holiday periods in Dunedin seemed always to restore his vitality. Nearing Bombay be took seriously ill, and was admitted into St. George’s Hospital, where his condition took a more serious turn, which necessitated an immediate operation. Hope was held for his recovery the nest morning, but at midnight he died. The funeral was conducted from the hospital to the Sewree Cemetery, and was largely attended by his fellow engineers, representatives of his firm and officers, and also several commanders and officers of the steamers in port. Wreaths from the firm of the B.LS.N. Company Ltd. were laid on the grave, together with many floral tributes from the commanders, officers, engineers, and friends.
