EARLY SETTLERS

OTAGO ASSOCIATION The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association was held yesterday afternoon. There were present: Alessrs D. J. Calder (president, in the chair), F. W. Knight, E. Webster, W. Nicolson, E. C. Hazlett, C. Alorris, W. H. Ferens, James Wallace, J. Hope, H. Baron, C. C. Robertson, R. S. J. A. Alacdonald. F. FI. Campbell, and J. Wilson. The President referred to the death of His Majesty King George V., and moved the following resolution: —“It is with profound regret that we have to record the great loss our Empire has suffered by the death of our beloved Sovereign, King George V., revered and loved by us all, who for over a quarter of a century occupied the Throne, and by bis high ideals of service and devotion to duty exercised an outstanding influence for the great benefit of the Empire; and, further, we affirm our- whole-hearted loyalty to our new Sovereign, King Edward VIII.” As a marUof respect members stood in silence. An invitation was received from the Bruce-Clntha Early Settlers’ Association for as many as possible to attend its picnic to be held at Balclutha on Friday, and an invitation was also received to attend the combined Wai-kouaiti-Port Chalmers Old Identities’ picnic to be held at Waikouaiti on Saturday, February 29. The proposed school essay competition on ‘ Early History of Otago ’ was held over until next meeting. Arrangements in connection with the anniversary reunion gathering on March 23 and 24 next were left m the hands of the Social Committee. The Chairman reported that the work in connection with the renovation and alterations to the Pioneers’ Hall was progressing satisfactorily, and the hall would be ready for the anniversary reunion.
