BRIGHT MUSICAL PLAY

•EVERGREEN’ FOR OCTAGON The British musical play, ‘ Evergreen,’ based on C. B. Cochran’s successful stage production, opens at the Octagon on Friday. Jessie Matthews, who appeared in the stage presentation, has the principal role in the film version. Clever direction and development of the original story have lifted it out of the ordinary musical comedy class into the realm of spectacular musical plays. It has a romantic story, and in the unfolding of its well-defined plot there are, beside much sparkling comedy, many strong dramatic touches. In the development of the theatre scenes the director has deftly woven into the fabric of the story spectacular features wholly in keeping with its atmosphere. Several tuneful songs have been specially written by the celebrated song composer, Harry Woods. Also on the programme will be a film entitled • Phantom Light.’
