CITY COUNCIL

REPORTS OF COMMITTEES At Monday’s meeting of the City Council the following matters'will come rip for consideration:- — The Wakari Improvement Society has written to the Tramways Committee urging that steps be taken to institute a bus service in the Wakari district with the least possible delay. It is the intention of the committee to run a trial service in the Wakari area with a view to testing out the traffic possibilities of_ the district. At the present time, however, there are no buses to spare to enable such a trial to be made, and the matter will, therefore, need to stand over until additional vehicles can bo purchased and put into commission. The Improvement Society has been advised to that effect. Consideration to a suggestion submitted by the Automobile Association of Otago that traffic control be instituted at the junction of George street and Frederick street between the hours of noon and 1 o’clock p.m., and at 5 o’clock, p.m., has been given by the General Committee. Upon receipt of the communication, arrangements were made for the taking of a tally of all classes of traffic at the point in question and adjacent street junctions. The figures obtained from the tally indicate that the volume of traffic in the locality is not relatively large, and, after taking that and other relative factors into consideration, the committee is of the opinion that the circumstances are not such as to warrant the institution of traffic control arrangements at the location referred to. The Automobile Association has been informed to that effect. For the purpose of the New Zealand Life Saving Championships, to be held at St. Clair on February 22 and 23, at which it is expected there will be more than 100 visiting contestants, the ladies’ side of the surf pavilion at St. Clair has been allotted by the General Committee for the exclusive use of those taking part in the championships. The Library Committee makes special reference to a donation sent in by Mr W. Sivertsen. of 54 Stuart street, Dunedin. This includes 59 volumes, all of which are of general interest, and will be of use m the library. Mr Sivertsen has been warmly thanked for his donation.

Following the previous report to the council regarding the proposed bus service in the Anderson’s Bay area, arrangements have now been made for the service to commence as from February 17 next. It will be run on trial for three months only on the Anderson’s Bay terrainus-Shiel Hill-Ander-son’s Bay Cemetery route. With the data that will be obtained from the trial running the whole question of transport facilities in the district will then be taken into consideration by the Tramways Committee. The Tramways Committee has granted the _ St. Clair Carnival Committee permission to use the department’s property at St. Clair, comprising the St. Clair pavilion and surrounding grounds, including the putting green, for the purposes of the carnival to be held on February 27, 28, and 29.

Authority has been granted by the Tramways Committee to invite tenders by advertisement for tho supply and delivery of two 25-30-seater omnibus chassis, either petrol or diesel driven. Two of the bus_ fleet reached the end of their economic life during the past year, and throughout the summer season the department has had to repeatedly hire private buses to enable it to cater for the business offering. The two additional ,’«uses are required for service by October next. The bodies would bo built in the department’s workshops. The gas engineer’s summary of the carbonising results obtained at the works during the month of December

shows an increase in the gas output, as compared with the corresponding month of the previous year, of 484,000 cubic feet (2.322 per cent.). Sales of tar increased from 14,183 gallons to 32,201 gallons. The city engineer has been authorised by the Water Committee to proceed with extensions of mains as follows;—Replacing the Sin main in Alison Crescent with a 4in main for a length of six chains from the branch in Michie street, and extending the main a distance of two and a-half chains—the estimated cost is £144, of which £6l is chargeable to renewals and £B3 to extensions; 15 chains of 4in main in Marewa street connecting the 4in main in Middleton road with the 4in main in Lockerbie street, the estimated cost being £255. The Water -Committee has accepted the tender of Messrs A. and T. Burt Ltd. in the sum of £3 per ton for the purchase of approximately 20 tons of scrap iron. Tho_ tender was the higher of two received.
