SPIVAKOVSKY-KURTZ TRIO

FINAL RECITAL The association of the SpiyakovskyKurtz Trio in the final recital of a) memorable season in the Concert Chamber last night was productive of al brilliant presentation of Maurice Ravel’s trio, surely one of the most difficult ensemble works • ever_ conceived.; This was the first occasion off which the trio was being performed in Dunedin, and the very small audience that did hear it will carry the memory of its great beauty through a lifetime,The players mastered the almost impossible technical intricacies that are th« foundation of its modern design with their customary and sensitively developed skill, and throughout were always closely in accord with one another. The result was a. glorious performance by ■ a remarkably artistic trio. The beauty and simplicity of Corelli’s ‘‘ Las Folia ’ were accentuated in the violin rendition by Mr Tossy Spivakovsky,, who also played Bach’s 1 Prelude and Fugue in D Major,’ both compositions receiving richly colourful treatments* An inspiring interpretation of the Haydn ‘ Violoncello Concerto in D Major ’ was given by Mr Kurtz. Sensitive balance and artistic insight invariably distinguish his playing. Recalled, he played ‘ The Flight of the Bumble Bee,’ by Rimsky-Korsakoff* Mr Jascha Spivakovsky’s solo numbers were ‘ Arabesque,’ Op. 18, and ‘ Trau-meswirren,’-both by Schumann, Gluck’i melodious fragment, ‘ Gavotte,’ arranged by Brahms, whose ‘ Capriccio ia B Minor ’ the performer also presented,The recital concluded with the Chopiff ‘Etude in C Minor’ Opus. 25, No. 12* Mr Noel Newson’s accompaniments reached a very high level. •
