OBITUARY

MR PETER REID The death occurred in a private hospital in Dunedin yesterday of Mr Peter Reid, of Lower Shotover, a well-known and highly respected resident of the district, and one whose name was also well known throughout the southern provinces, particularly in Southland, by reason of his' long association with the Bluff Harbour Board and his business interests in general. He had been in failing health for some time past. > Mr Reid, who was 72 years of age, was the second son of the late Mr and Mrs James Reid, of Arrowtown. He was, born at Strbnsa, Orkney Islands,and when an infant came to New Zealand with his parents, landing at the Bluff. The family came shortly afterwards to the diggings at Arrowtown,where he spent his boyhood, his father engaging there in mining, followed by farming. When scarcely out of his teens he and his brother took up the farm at Lower Shotover, where he had lived for a period of over 50 years. His brother died a few years after they acquired the property. The death of Mr Reid has_ removed a personality active in the civic, social, and public life of the Lake County. He was a member of the Lake County Council from 1902 to 1905, and he represented the combined district of the Lake County and the boroughs of Queenstown and Arrowtown on the Bluff Harbour Board continuously from 1917 to 1936, only twice (in 1923 and 1932) being opposed, and then unsuccessfully. He was also a member of several other public and private institutions, in all of which he rendered valuable service. He leaves a widow, but no family, and js survived by four brothers and one sister.
