WEATHER FORECAST

MAINLY FAIR TO FINE The following weather forecast was issued at noon by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, covering the south* ern district—Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Tapanui, Winton, Invercargill, Riverton, Orepuki, Bluff, Halfmoon Bay;— The general inference is that _ a shallow depression crossed the Dominion last night. Still another is approaching across the Tasman Sea. Forecast: Winds variable, light to moderate north-westerlies prevailing, but sea breezes on the coast. Weather mainly fair to fine, but some showers later about Foveaux Strait. Seas moderate to rather rough in Foveaux Strait. Elsewhere slight to moderate. SUNNY, BUT UNSETTLED. Indications are for a continuation of the sharp spell of rain last evening, even though this morning was clear and sunny. The weather gave every sign, of becoming unsettled, and after noon, when the barometer was falling at 29.7 in, the freshening north-east breeze was bringing low clouds in its train. The atmosphere was mild at midday, the maximum temperature being 68deg, and_ that for yesterday 71deg. The minimum readings for the respective periods were 61deg and_ 53.3 deg. Yesterday afternoon promised a welcome fall of rain, but though the higher levels round the city experienced the greatest benefit from the shower, it was not sufficient to be recorded.
