OTAGO HOLDS LEAD

Intermediate and Junior Swimmers

S. W. JARVIS WINS AGAIN,

Two Diving Titles to Dunedin

[Special to the ‘ Star.’]

HAMILTON, January 27. Otago and Southland teams had a keen tussle at the second session of the New Zealand intermediate and jmnor swimming championships -tc-mght, scoring three victories towards the war memorial shield. Through gains on the first night Otago leads Southland by two points, and retention of the trophy ii assured. The superiority of these teams reflects great improvement, which is due to the policy of encouragement of the youngsters. The successful Otago representatives were, Syd. Jarvis, Dorothy Pope, and Charlie Eckhold. Southland’s representatives, r. MTnnes and J. Cameron, staged a thrilling duel in the 220yds junior boys ohampionsliip, and reached for finish practically together, many thinkinn* it was a dead heat. However, the verdict ' went to MTnnes. Both are very promising boys, yet pot up-to the standard gained by the record-holder, S. W. Jarvis, of Otago. His record ot 2min 36 3-ssec is 7 2-ssec faster than M'lnnes’s time. .M*lnries and J. Cameron employ similar styles—wide-swing-ing arms and a sharp catch. The South Auckland boy,- R. Mornion. a Maori, made a good opening, leading over the first 50yds, but he lacked stamina and finished well behind the Southlanders. The Aucklander, S. Rippon, was no match for them. The splendid start by the Southland team was given further effect in the contest for the 75yds intermediate girls’ breast-stroke championship, this being won by Miss C. Lynch, who, withstanding a strong challenge by Miss VV. Dunn (Otago), registered 61sec, which was 1 l-ssec above the record of Miss J. Webster (Auckland). The third competitor, : Miss G. Priestly (Auckland), could not keep pace with- Misses. Lynch and Dunn, nor has she the same gliding action. They should develop into exceptionally good seniors. Miss Dunn swam well up to her home form. Again ■S. W. Jarvis' (Otago) -proved definitely better than A. Pascoe (Auckland) in the furlong intermediate boys’ - championship, apparently using less effort. Jarvis went to the front from the 100yds, and won by a comfortable margin "in 2min 30sec, which- was very creditable, and was 7 3-ssec outside N. Crump’s record.

The diving event was held immediately prior to the race, and the cork lanes were cleared to the side of the bath, and through a tie for third in the heat the final was contested by the seven competitors who qualihecl. As there were only sue lanes the onicials kept the ropes aside. This, however, was not in accordance with the rule which states: “ For all .New Zealand championship events the course shall be divided by ropes or other suitable means into lanes, and each competitor shall swim in a separate lane. After consultation the officials decided to reswim the race. Miss Thomson voluntarily withdrew to allow the others to have a lane each. In a thrilling tussle with Miss Black Miss Kera won by a yard amid great enthusiasm. The time was 3-sseo slower than Miss Black’s record. It was an impressive exhibition by two talented girls. Otago enthusiasts have no grounds for fearing that Jarvis will be defeated in the 100yds to-morrow niojht. While there are some who did not altogether like his style, his ability has made a fine impression. An improved showing was made by H. Goldsmith (Auckland), who failed by a couple of yards to beat Pascoe for second place. Otago’s superior diving was reflected by the victories of its representatives in. the intermediate boys’ and girls’ events. C. Edkhold and Miss D. Pope respectively. Eckhold, as shown by the points, did not give a first-class display, but disclosed greater polish and precision than his only opponent, E. Mortimer (Auckland). , . Owing to the competitors’ lack of experience the standard in the intermediate girls’ diving (the first occasion this was contested) was mediocre. However, Miss Pope pleased the judges enough to be awarded a clear ityThe 100yds intermediate boys’ breast stroke championship vied with the junior girls’ free style as the most thrilling struggle, although the crowd, impartial through having no leading 'representative of its own, was roused to a stirring pitch of excitement as K. Shaw (Southland) and G. Chambers (Otago) staged their duel. At one stage towards the end of the second lap it seemed as if Chambers might overtake his rival, but, replying to his doggedness with as much determination to hold the lead, Shaw succeeded in marking the finish half a yard faster. Both lads were warmly applauded by the spectators, who were delighted by their stylishness. They were a good deal slower than Reg. Geddes’s record, but if their progress has been as steady as in the past the senior breast stroke of the future will not be without distinction. Chambers put up a meritorious performance in his first year in the division. A breach of the regulations by the carnival controllers, the South Auckland Centre of the New _ Zealand 'Amateur Swimming Association, combined with the mistake of the remarkable Maori girl. Miss Nawi Kera, in swimming crookedly made a fiasco of the race for the 60yds junior title. Through the failure to provide lanes Miss Kera, when holding a lead of 4ft at the turn from Miss M. Black (Auckland), collided violently on pushing off from the side of the bath with Miss J. Thomson (Otago), who had started * alongside her, and also swam out of her course. The obstruction enabled Miss Black to shoot ahead, and although Miss Kera strove grimly to eave the race she was beaten ■to the lope bjr 2£t,
