ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY
MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society was held last night. Present were Messrs G. E. Turner (in the chair), A. B. Welsh, S. E. Aburn, R. Fountain, M. Barratt, W. Raffills, S. H. Barnes, J Maconie, W. H. Wilson, G. Porter, J, Hutchison, W. G. Reid, A. J. White, G. Howes, H. G. Williams, C. A. Wilson, and T. Long. GAME COMMITTEE. The report of the Game Committee stated that a letter had been received from the curator of the Wellington Zoological Gardens asking if, in the event of permission being granted by the Minister to transfer the seal at St. Clair, the ranger would catch and rail it.—lt was recommended that the curator he advised that as the seal was an asset to the foreshore it would be an unpopular proceeding to have it removed. The report was adopted. PHEASANT COMMITTEE. The Pheasant' Committee reported that the following letters had been received From the curator of the hatcheries (Mr W. Claringbold), reporting that the pheasant chicks (165) were doing well, and that 600 eggs were still to hatch; he also suggested that 20 old hen pheasants and 15 young and old cocks, be liberated. From Mr R. Adamson, reporting a heavy death rate of the pheasant chicks recently transferred to brooders. From Mr E. Duncan, Invercargill, giving informatoin about the rearing of young pheasants. The report was adopted. ANGLING COMMITTEE. The Angling Committee reported that the following correspondence had been received:—From Professor A. W. Parrott, Fresh Water Research Committee, Christchurch, acknowledging receipt of the 221 scale samples. From Mr D. F. Hobbs, New Zealand Fresh Water Research Committee, Christchurch, reporting on inspections of the Mimihau, Mairarua, and Waikaka Rivers. From Mr J. W. Smith, Pembroke, reporting on the stomach contents of shags shot at Lake Wanaka. The report was adopted. CONSTRUCTION OF MAI MAIS. The "Chairman submitted a recommendation of ,a sub-committee regarding the construction of mai mais during the shooting season. The Sub-committee recommended that “ No person shall use or cause to be used on any water within the district for the taking or killing of imported game and/or native game any lixed stand, pontoon, hide, mai mai, or 100 except within a distance of half a chain from the edge of such water in non-tidal waters, or half a chain from low-water mark in tidal waters, or, where rapu abounds, half a chain from the outside edge of such rapu.” The recommendation was adopted subject to the confirmation of the Department of Internal Affairs.
