BOY DROWNED IN HARBOUR. Lean James, aged six, the son of a well-known settler at Pollpk, near Waiuku, was drowned while bathing in the Manukau Harbour at Pollok yesterday afternoon. With a younger brother ho was bathing in shallow water near the shore when both boys suddenly found themselves beyond their depth in the channel. The younger boy was rescued by people on the beach, who saw that tho two were in difficulties, but Lean disappeared. Tho body was recovered later. YOUTH GRAVELY INJURED. Edwin Holmes, aged 18, a son of Mr Charles Holmes, of Martinborough, was seriously wounded while rabbit shooting at Hiuakura. The accident happened when Holmes was getting through a fence, his shotgun discharging and wounding him in tho left breast. His condition to-night had improved, but he is not yet out of danger MOUNT CARGILL FATALITY. An inquest was opened to-day by the coroner (Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) into the death of James Sim, whose body was found on Mount Cargill on Sunday. Evidence of identification was given by Robert Lindsay Fairmaid, a solicitor, who said that the features were not recognisable. The reason for his belief was that the body corresponded with the height of the man, and papers found on the body, including a pension certificate, were in Sim's name. The deceased had previously left with witness a notice from the Pensions Department relating to the pension. A. letter from witness’s firm to Sim was also found on tho body. The spectacles also gave proof of identity. . The inquest was. adjourned sine die. BUSHMAN KILLED. Bertram Hughes, employed by Hamilton and Co. of Papatotara, was fatally injured yesterday afternoon when engaged in tree felling in the bush at Tuatapere. Hughes and a companion, Farquharson, .felled a tree, which struck the butt of another lying on the ground. The impact threw the head of the fallen tree towards the base of the trunk which had just been felled. Hughes was struck and pinned to the ground by the treehead. Farquharson was also struck, but was able to call other bushmen working close at hand. The tree was lifted from Hushes, who was alive hut unconscious. He died before reaching hospital Farquharson sustained fractured ribs, a slight injury to the lungs, and shock. Well known as “ Terry ” Hughes, the deceased was a married man, aged 44, with two young sons. He was a popular resident of the district, and a returned soldier, having been badly wounded at Passchendaele.—lnvercargill Press Association. DROWNED IN RIVER. Edward John Cavanagh, aged 25, an exchange clerk at the Motueka Post Office, whose parents reside in Wellington, was drowned in the Motueka River yesterday afternoon. He left home early in the afternoon for a swim. The body was found at 4.30 p.m. in a deep pool. Deceased was learning to swim, and had been making use of waterwings, which apparently failed him.— Nelson Press Association. QUARRY EMPLOYEE INJURED. Struck by a piece of rock while engaged in blasting operations at Palmer’s quarry, Logan Point, yesterday afternoon, William Mitchell, aged 34, received concussion and abrasions on the temple, and was admitted to the Public Hospital at 3.30. His condition this morning was not serious. FALL OFF TRAM CAR. A fall off a tram car at Cargill’s Corner yesterday' afternoon resulted in the removal to "the Public Hospital at 1.45 of Ernest Morris, suffering from concussion. He is eight years of age, and resides at 22 Playfair street, Caversham. His condition this morning had improved. STRUCK BY GIRDER. Head injuries, caused through being struck by a girder, necessitated the removal of Albert Pearce, a married man, to the Public Hospital yesterday afternoon. Pearce, aged 39, and employed by the Hume Steel Company, was not seriously hurt.
