ELLSWORTH’S PLANE
EFFORT TO RECOVER POLAR STAR TRACTOR FALLS INTO CREVASSE Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright MONTREAL, January 27. (Received January 28, at 1 a.in.) A party of four from the Wyatt Earp, under the leadership of Lumburner, has gone with a tractor and a supply of petrol to recover the Polar Star. They hope to lly the craft back to the Wyatt Earp, where it will be stowed for the return trip. As the party may have temporary difficulty in finding the plane in the snow the time required to salvage it cannot be estimated. “We are keeping daily contact with Mr Ellsworth aboard the Discovery II,” states the message. “All hands arc anxious to have our boat leave the Bay of Whales as soon as possible.” A later message states: “ The men had scarcely started the trek to the Polar Star when disaster almost overtook them. Finding their own tractor unsuitable they used one leit by Admiral Byrd. While passing near his camp the tractor suddenly fell into a crevasse. Fortunately the machine jammed between the two sides and the men were able to scramble to safety. If it had fallen the full 35ft to the bottom all -would probably have been drowned. The men will return to the Wyatt Earp. It is now planned to fly the Texaco Twenty to take petrol to the Polar Star.”
