SPEEDOMETER DRIVE

PERIODICAL LUBRICATION The drive which is almost invariably employed to operate the speedometer consists of a flexible shaft enclosed within a metallic.sheathing. The length of this component is often considerable and the speed of rotation is fairly high, so that periodical lubrication is necessary if the device is to give really good service. 'Many people are under the impression that it suffices to disconnect the tpp end of the cable .-from :the speedometer, then to insert a little oil from a can. This procedure has only a temporary effect. The drive can only be lubricated satisfactorily by withdrawing the cable from the sheathing and plastering ,it with thin grease before replacement. This procedure is recommended f at 2,000-mile intervals, and after 6,000 miles, the flexible shaft should also be thoroughly cleaned. An unlubricated drive is nojsy and work's with such friction that it may give erratic speedometer .readings. Indeed, whenever the, speedometer needle tends to flicker to and fro, the drive should be suspected.
