Recalling the stories of bursting dykes in the Netherlands in the Middle Ages, the inhabitants of the village of Laronde, near La Rochelle, were awakened by the beating of drums and told that the dykes had burst. Families worked throughout the night and all to-day repairing the river banks, _ while household possessions were floating in the streets.
