LEN CASEY'S ENTHUSIASM
EX-OTAGO CRICKETER IN HAMILTON The older generation of cricketer* will remember Len Casey, the Christian Brothers’ and Dunedin fast bowler, * who supplied the pacey stuff for Otago prior to the Dickinson period. Lea Casey was, and still is, a real enthusiast in the game, and when he was transferred from Dunedin to Grey-; mouth several years ago he immediately made his presence* felt in cricket circles on the West Coast. Recently he was again transferred, this time to - Hamilton, ,■ whence he writes to a Dunedin friend. Len states that he had intended giving up plaving in favour Of umpiring, but he had been persuaded to throw in his lot with the Claudelands Club, which had been experiencing-* lean time. Those who remember the enthusiasm which he put into his cricket activities here will understand what it means when Len says “I am determined to make Claudelands into a good club,” and also when he remarks, “If I was in Dunedin I would gladly give a hand to build up the old club (Dunedin) again.” * Len was pleased with the keenness shown in the field by the Otago team' against Auckland. He witnessed' part or that match, and met George Mills, who is, he says, looking well. In con- • elusion, Len wished to be remembered to “ all the old brigade,” including Mr J. J. Clark, Jim Baker, Alex. Downes, Frank Williams. Dirfe Torrance, • Billy Johnston, Jim' ■ Shepherd,, and Arthur Galland. * ,
v- The “ send-off ” which Len experienced when he left Greymouth was participated in not only by the Cricket Association - , the Marist Cricket Club, and other cricket bodies, hut by the Golf Club, his shooting companions, and, of course, by the staff of the Government Life Assurance Department, of which he was manager. Roth the West Coast pricket Association ami the Marist Cricket Club made him an honorary life member.
