BUTLER’S CAPTURE
THIEF LOCKED IN BEDROOM -. Finding an intruder in ‘a third-floor bedroom in his master’s house, a butler of Mayfair, London, locked him in and telephoned for the police. . The man was found to be in possession of £2OO worth of jewellery and cash, which had been stolen from, the house. This story was .told recently when John Patrick Devoy, aged 19, an exstNdier, of no fixed home, was charged on'remand at Marylebone with stealing the money and jewellery from a hoqsa in Park street, Mayfair. Detective Hassell stated that Devoy, who pleaded guilty, entered jhe house through ■ah open door- and made his way to the third floor. He was found by the butler, who locked him in and telephoned for the police. Devoy was removed to the police station, where the stolen money and' jewellery were taken from him. The- officer added that Devoy, who came of a very respectable family, ia Dublin, had only been out of hospital five days when he committed this offence. He appeared to be very sorry. On his promising to return to Ireland, the magistrate placed Devoy on probation for two years, with a condition to reside out of Great Britain.
