GANGSTER “KING” IN PRISON BAND
“ Scarface ” AI Capone, erstwhile “ king ” of the gangsters of Chicago, is a very different man to-day. The time he has already served of the 11-year sentence in grim Alcatraz Island—known as the “ Devil’s Island ” of America—seems to have sent him groping for “ culture.” He spends hours in the prison library, poring over the volumes in his search for knowledge. He is also known to be very busy with his typewriter. Music, too, is calling him. Half an hour a day is permitted Capone in which to a new enthusiasm for instrumental exercise. A'l devotes this precious interval to strumming on a banjo. He has now been allowed to take his place in the prison baud.
