Mrs Earle Johnson and Miss Rosemary Johnson leave on Tuesday on a visit to Mrs Johnson’s mother, Lady Cooper, Auckland. Mrs W. Quinn and Miss Perrin, of Invercargill, will . pass through Dunedin on Monday to compete in the South Island croquet championships to be held at Timaru. Mrs Simon and Miss Marjory Simon, of Christchurch, are the guests of Mrs L. Robertson, Lonsdale street, Belleknowes, for the Campbell-Ferguson wedding. ' The engagement is announced of Ngaire, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs S. C. Jenkinson, Tolcarne Avenue, to Eric, second son of Mr and Mrs J. Hunter, Gore. Mesdames W. N. Corbet and H. J. Dixon, of the Punga Croquet Club, will leave on Monday for Timaru to compete in the South Island croquet championships. Mrs K. Allan, Mr J. Allan, and Miss Madge Allan, Rock and Pillar, and Mr A.. Austin, of Ngakawau, Westland, accompanied by their son and daughter, who came to Dunedin for the ' Campbell-Ferguson wedding, are the guests of Mrs T. Ferguson, Highgate. An engagement is announced between Joan Walsh, younger daughter of Mrs Butler and the late Mr F. W. Butler, and Colin D., only son of Mrs Stevens and the late Mr C. Stevens, both of Dunedin.

A very'successful progressive Yankee holiday tournament was held on the St. Clair Croquet Club’s lawns hetwe.en Christmas and New Year,, arranged by Mrs J. G. H. Briggs. The concluding games were played on Monday. The winner proved to be Mrs Moloney, with Mrs Torrance and Miss Sparrow as runners-up. A very pleasant little function was held in the afternoon in the pavilion, which was gaily decorated with flowers for the occasion by Mrs T. 1?. Fleming. Afternoon tea -was served, and after the trophies had been presented a small presentation was made to Mrs Briggs by Mrs W. Speight as a slight recognition of the successful way in which the tournament had been’conducted.. On Saturday, December 21, the pupils of Miss Thelma Anthony, Roslyn, spent a very happy afternoon and evening, when they held their break-up at Linden 'Hall. The children entertained their parents with their year’s work, exercises, and dancing. _ Two prizes were donated by Miss Tui Hutton, who also presented the winners with their prizes. Miss Anthony received bouquets and several nice gifts. Tea was served, and after games had been played the brought the happy Time to a close with cheers for Mrs Rowe (accompanist) and Miss Anthony.

Following a very enjoyable Christmas Eve party, Messrs Max Wilson and Val Pickerill staged another successful one on New Year’s Eve, when 100 couples responded to the invitations. The hall was decorated with New Zealand native tree ferns, and these, interspersed with balloons and a coloured spotlight, made an animated scene. The Monte Carlo was won by Miss V. Williams and Mr I. Milne. As the town clock struck midnight all joined hands and sang ‘ Auld. Lang Syne ’ with plenty of vigour.
