OTAGO CHESS CLUB
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Chess Club was held in the club’s playing rooms on Saturday evening. The president (Mr E. F. Evans) was in the chair, and' the following members of the committee wex - © also present:— Messrs G. D. Wright, R- M'Dermid, D. Langley, W. Lang, J., S. M. Lawson, G. Begg, Harris D. Hastings, and the secretary (Mr W. Herbert). Correspondence was read from_ the New Zealand Chess Association advising tlxat there was every possibility now of a minor tourney and a ladies’ match being held simultaneously with the Dominion championship event. The nominations of Mr J. B. Dunlop fox* the championship and Messrs R. Watt, DLangley, and R. 0. Scott for the minor event were endorsed. In reference to the visit of_ Mr C. J• S. Purdy,-the young Australian champion, the association conveyed the information that Mr Purdy’s visit to Dunedin would he of three days’ durar tibn, possibly on or about Januai'y 15. A sub-committee was set up to make the arrangements for the visit. The Otago Chess Club delegates on ■the New Zealand Chess Association reported that the association held a very successful meeting on December 2. Twenty entries had been received for the New Zealand Chess Congress, to be held at Wellington, which opens on Boxing Day. An Elimination Board had been set up, and had eliminated six of the 20 players, leaving 14 to compete. Included amongst the aspirants for championship honours were Messrs C. J. S. Purdy, the present Australian champion, and J. A. Erskine, the present New Zealand champion. As this was the final meeting of the year, the president wished members a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
