UNIVERSITY'S GOOD SCORE

CARISBMOK'B TASK NOT EASY After their exceedingly poor showing against Albion, the University batsmen made a comparatively good score against Carisbrook last week, and are now in a position to gain a first innings victory. On paper, however, Carisbrook has a very strong batting side, and a score of 216 should be quite within its reach, despite the strength of the ’Varsity attack. Much will depend upon the state of the wicket as to thp final outcome of the match. Last Saturday the University batsmen adopted cautious tactics, and for the most part were scratching for runs. Ryan and M‘Garten, two colts from the disbanded Christian Brothers’ Old Boys Club, however, gave impressive performances, and provided the only bright spots in a rather dull day’s cridket. Both Ryan and M'Carten batted patiently, but each took the opportunity of notching “ 6’s ” during their stay at the crease. ' J. Dunning was easily the best bowler for Carisbrook, and while he obtained six for 77 he was unfortunate in being the victim of dropped catches. Furthermore, five of his victims were bowled. On the whole, Carisbrook’s fielding was far from first grade standard, most of the players being sluggish in their work. J. M'Mullan (Otago’s sole selector) was, of course, a notable exception, and it is surprising that other players do not emulate his example. With such fine facilities as exist at Carisbrook for practice there can be no excuse for the pitiable efforts of some of the younger players of the team.
