GREEN ISLAND AERODROME.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir The above caption appears to have 'come in for some criticism at the council meeting last evening. The remarks to my mind were neither logical nor kind. Mr Todd started the airmindedness in a practical manner by giving the people of Otago a piece of ground . tested and passed by the Government aviation expert. Since then a big sum of money has been spent on the Taieri, which, had it been spent at Green Island, would have put these grounds in order and at the same time helped aviation by having an aerodrome close to the city. When Rongotai is cited, surely Green Island is far safer. ' The winds at Rongotai have to be experienced to be believed. Then again Cr Allen ’ stated that at Auckland land was being reclaimed from the sea for an aerodrome. Surely Green Island aerodrome is better situated than this. The foreshore at Dunedin will not be available for years, and the wind and hills are still to be reckoned with, but surely with improved machines idle questions of Lanti-

ing and taking off can be answered. The telegraph lines are a menace to Taieri. The distance is a disadvantage, so the. question of tackling Green Island is worth serious consideration. I waited three days in New York last year because the planes could not leave for Florida; There is no reason why Dunedin should not have an ■ aerodrome at Green Island. Engineers can make a suitable ground and better roads, improve corners and widen side roads, and passengers could arrive in a few minutes from Dunedin. Timaru has an aerodrome right against the sea as Salt Water Creek. Dunedin has the ground at Green Island; it only wants more airmindedness on the part of those in charge.—l am, etc., December 10. R. S. Black.
