GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council was held last night, there being present Mr T. MvLhan (mayor), Crs Orange, Pringle, Brown,' Dickinson, Hopewell, and JEomkins. WORKS COMMITTEE., The Works Committee recommended that an estimate of the cost of carrying out alterations to lighting poles opposite the service station be obtained; that the engineer report on tenders re- ■ ceived for repairs to main highway, and that he report on the question of obtaining ballast from the railway line between Abbotsford and Green Island; that improvements as outlined in report be carried out to frontage of the property of Mr Syder, Abbotsford. It was decided to purchase 60yds of railway metal, and in the event of a further supply being available, that the inatter be reconsidered. The report was adopted. WATER AND LIGHTING. The engineer reported that the water system was in good order and little attention had been necessary- during the month. Two services were repaired— London street and Main South road (Glenfoot) —while one service was lowered in Kirkland street for kerbing and channelling. The Burnside lighting circuit continued to give .trouble, and 13 ■ lamps required replacement during the month, while .only three renewals were required on the Green Island circuit. He suggested that these facts be submitted to the city electrical engineer. Three lamps were broken by stones — two in Concord Lane, and one on the main highway. The Water and Lighting Committee’s report recommended that the city electrical engineer again be notified of the increasing number of lamp breakages during the last month : that the head masters of the Concord arid Green Island Schools be notified of the wilful damage being done to street globes, and that this matter also be referred to the police; that application be made to the Unemployment Board for a 355-man week subsidy on the work of laying water mains. There was a short discussion on the final 'clause in the .-report, and it was pointed out that the decision was reached by the committee before the General Election, and that the, position, was how that anything migh’f happen between the present time and next March. The report was adopted. RESERVES AND CEMETERY. In its report the Reserves and Cemetery Committee made the following recommendations :—That the Cricket Club be requested, to furnish dates (if any) on which Miller Park will be available for matches for the Druids’ Lodge and the Labour Party; that an application -.to cut grass .on Shand street and at the Cemetery be granted subject to the approval and according to the conditions laid down by the chairman of reserves and the borough engineer; that the Department of Agriculture be again approached with a view to leasing land adjoining MillerPark. The report was adopted. FINANCE. The Finance Committee made the following recommendations : —That rates amounting to £8 Is 6d for the yearended March 31, 1931, be written off as irrecoverable. That 10 per cent, penalties amounting to £3 11s 2d be remitted. That the mayor, the chairman of finance, and the town clerk sign the joint application on behalf-of the council to have the borough of Green Island included in the Dunedin metropolitan fire area. That a communication regarding a housing scheme be referred to the • Housing Sub-committee. The report was adopted. DRAINAGE COMMITTEE. The following recommendations were made by the Drainage Committee’s report :—That the engineer report on tenders for supply and delivery of hardwood piles. • That the tender of John Duthie and Co. Ltd. for the supply and delivery of cast iron pipes in the sum of £542 16s 4dbe accepted. That drainage employees be granted leave on full pay from December 25, 1935, to January 2, 1936 (both days inclusive), and that the following arrangements be made in regard to pay:—(a) Payment for period ending December 18 to be made on December 20; (b) Payment for period ending December 25 to be made ton December 24. The report was adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT. T« his report the engineer stated that ■pay sheets covering a .period of two jcomplete fortnights amounted to £94 10s. On the Dunedin-Invereargill main highway he had not been able to com, plete the filling in of the pot holes, but

an effort was being made to have the work done during this week. It was proposed to use plant-mixed material, which was proving satisfactory in the city. That portion of the Green IslandTaieri Mouth highway in front of Mr. Valpy’s property had been pitched and the surface restored. It was found to be very wet, and the pitching now provided for subsoil drainage. There were still some small repairs to be done. The hire cost of the grader to a construction firm would be £55 28-

In Exmouth street the path had been formed from Torquay to Snulma streets, and gravel had been, spread on the footpath from North Taieri road to Exeter street and continued up to Exeter street. In Runciraan street gravel had been used on the footpath from the Methodist Church to the footbridge over the railway. The entrances in John street had also been surfaced with gravel. The stormwater drain on the North Taieri road at the intersection of Paterson street collapsed, and on being opened the drain was found to be built of stone and in a bad condition. It was relaid with 6in pipes, but the outlet could not be ascertained. It evidently discharged somewhere on railway land. In the North Taieri road the worst of the pot holes had been filled with metal and blinded. In School street the water channels had been cleaned and the refuse removed. It was proposed to gravel this footpath from Shand to Kirkland streets. In the main road, near the Council Chambers, the footpath had been repaired with asphalt. Re'pairs to the 12in drain in this locality made this necessary. A commencement was made with the extension of the stone abutment in Harraway’s road bridge, but owing to the wet weather the stream rose and the men were unable to complete the work. Other general work had also been carried out. The channels in Miller street were overgrown, and should be cleaned out as- soon as the opportunity offered. In Kirkand street good progress was being made with the kerbing and channelling, which had been completed to the foot of the hill, and the kerbing constructed from there to York street. It was the intention -to complete the concrete work before any asphalting was done. Only three men had been employed there since November 11. Another man could be allocated this work if the committee so desired. Works in band were the completion of kerbing, channelling, and asphalting in Kirkland street, the Neil street footpath, Mulford street, Kaikorai Stream abutment, footpath and channel upper stormwater in Quarry road, and repairs to mMn highway. The report was adopted.
