Ine family settled in Dunedin, and deceased ■worked as an apprentice on the ‘ Otago Witriess,’ the late Sir Geo. Fenwick being an apprentice there at the same time. In June, 1861, deceased accompanied his father and brother to _ the Gabriel’s Gully diggings, and remained there for some time, meeting with a fair measure of success. Later the family removed to Evansdale,; and in 1890, when the Gatlins district was opened up for settlement, deceased was one of the first to take up land at Houipapa, where he resided till death. It was he who was instrumental in getting the settlement named Houipapa, it being originally known as Riiibonwodd Flat.” When on a visit .to Balclutha Mr Wright had an interview with a Maori who. informed him that the correct native name was “Houipapa,” hence the change. For upwards of 20 years Mr Wright successfully conducted a storekeeping business at Houipapa, and retired 10 years ago. He took an active interest in school and church matters and was highly respected. He is survived by three sons and two daughters—viz., Messrs Archibald (Martinborough). William' and David (Houipapa), Mrs J. G. Read (Mosgiel), and Miss N. Wright (Houipapa).
