ADDRESS INDICATORS

SIMPLIFYING THE SOBTEHS' TASK CO-OPERATION OF PUBLIC AGAIN SOUGHT There is a steady but slow increase in the proportion of received correspondence at the Dunedin Post Office following the postal district indicator system, which was introduced in Marco last, but there are still many who have failed to include the indicator in their addresses for replies. Checks are made regularly to discover what proportion of the inward correspondence bears the indicator. _ . When the new system was introduced the business firms in the town were canvassed, and asked to arrange for the insertion of the postal indicator on their record cards and on their letter heads as the opportunity offered. In many cases the business section responded to the request, but it was reported this morning that quite a fair number have not fallen into line as anticipated. These latter are apparently taking no action to include the postal indicator in their addresses sent out. It is also found that private individuals are not using the system to the extent anticipated, although all householders were communicated with immediately the scheme _ commenced, and were supplied with a circular showing the indicators of the districts in which they live. Even this measure has failed to obtain the full co-operation of residents in the matter of placing the indicator in the addresses sent to friends, and consequently some of the replies do not show the district indicator. The system was introduced to simplify the task of the letter sorters, but they cannot receive the maximum benefit until all members of the public co-operate.' . , To many of the letters received minus the indicator,' the department attaches a tactful sticker, which reads: “ If you show on your letters the postal indicator your correspondents may use it and so help to avoid delay in delivery.” ’ It is recognised that forgetfulness is common to most people, and that many, who are desirous of attaching the indicator to their addresses, do not do so because the particular indicator has slipped the memory,_ To refresh their memories the various districts and their designations are here given:— b IndiPostal District. cator.
