MOTORING MISHAPS. A fatal motor smash occurred at Hatuma, near Waipukurau, yesterday afternoon, the car skidding in loose metal at a corner in Hatuma road. The car, driven by Miss Hilda Ellen Peacock, crashed into a bank, and Miss Peacock, who was well known throughout Hawke’s Bay, was fatally injured. A passenger, Mrs W. B. Fisher, suffered injuries which necessitated her removal to the Waipukurau Hospital. The car was extensively damaged. As the result of being knocked down by a taxi cab while she was crossing from one side of Grafton Bridge to the other, Miss Louisa Falgate, aged 62, received injuries from which she died in Auckland Hospital. Struck by a train last evening on a level crossing on the main road between Waipukurau and Waipawa, a car, owned and driven by Mr W. Goring Johnston, of Tamujnu, was hurled back across the road and badly smashed. The car went down a bank and through a fence. The driver had a miraculous escape, suffering only shock and slight injuries. FINGER CRUSHED. William Rein, aged 65 years, residing at 9 John street, Caversham, suffered a bad fracture of the index finger, which was crushed while he was working at the wharf yesterday. He was admitted to the Hospital. FOUND DEAD.
