Mr F.. T. M. Kissel, chief electrical engineer to the P.ublic Works Department, arrived here last evening. Mr W. A Flavell left to-day for Christchurch on Westport Coal Company’s business. The Otago High Schools Board yesterday approved of Mr W. G. M‘Clymont, a member of the staff of the ‘ Otago Boys’ High School, being granted leave of absence to enable him to effect an exchange of position with Mr James Hossack, a member of the teaching staff of the Royal High School, Edinburgh. Mr M'Clymont’s leave will commence on October 14, and Mr Hossack will take up duty here on that date. Mr Hossack, who is head of the geography department in the Royal High School, Edinburgh, will remain l here until the end of the second term, 1936, and will return to Edinburgh in time to resume duty there on October 1, 1936. Mr M‘Clymont’s engagement at Edinburgh will cease on the latter date, but his leave of absence will include the whole of the year 1936. He will return to duty here at the beginning of 1937. A large and enthusiastic meeting of delegates representing the Reform and United Parties throughout the Wairarapa electorate was held in Carterton last evening to select the National Government candidate to contest the Wairarapa seat at the general election, Messrs J. W. Card and H. F. Toogood were the candidates, and after they had addressed the meeting *a bal-. lot was taken, resulting in the election of Mr Card. The meeting was pre-’ sided over by Mr D. Ardell. dominion organiser of the National Federation, who stated that Mr Card’s nomination would now he endorsed by the dominion executive.

Mr W: H. Field, M.P. for Otaki. yesterday announced his retirement from politics. The announcement coincides with bis seventy-fourth birthday, Mr Roland Hill, or the law publishing firm of Messrs Bntterworth and Co., London, arrived by yesterday’s afternoon express from the north.

The Hospital Committee of the Hospital Board recommends that the resignation of Dr J. D. Cottrell of his position as resident medical officer be accepted and authority be granted to invite applications as usual in Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand to fill the vacancy. The new Roman Catholic Metropolitan of New Zealand and Archbishop of Wellington, the Right Rev. Dr T. O’Shea, will receive the pallium, the insignia of his office, and be formally enthroned in his new dignity at a special Service in Wellington on August 15. The new Archbishop of Wellington is the second to hold the position since 1887, when the archdiocese was created' and Archbishop Redwood appointed to its head, and the ceremony next month will he one of the most important in the history of the Romdn Catholio Church in New Zealand for many years. A British official wireless message from Rugby states that the King has approved the appointment of Mr Francis D’Arcy Godolphin Osborne, Minister at Washington, to be His Majesty’s Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Holy See. A pleasant function took place at the store of Arthur Barnett Ltd. last evening, when the staff assembled to bid farewell to their late manager, Mr S. Lawn, who has left to commence his appointment as manager of Messrs Brown, Ewing, and Co. Mr S. Wood, on behalf of the members of the staff, presented Mr Lawn with a, chiming clock and salad bowl as a mark of esteem and appreciation from the staffs Mr Jeffrey Barnett, representing the directors of the company, handed Mr Lawn a cheque in recognition of his splendid' service over a long period of years, and the Rifle Club was acted foe by Mr Graham, who made the presentation of a pipe from its members,' Mr Lawn, in a happy speech, responded, thanking all for their feelings of goodwill.
