FIVE IN 7-FOOT ROOM
DESTITUTE WOMAN AND CHILDREN DOG IK BEDROOM TO KEEP RATS AWAY [Per United Press Association.l WELLINGTON, June 28. A description by two members of the Wellington Hospital Board of a visit to a small room in a house in Taranaki street in which a destitute woman and four children were living in “an outrageous condition ” was given at the meeting of the Hospital Board. After reference to the housing shortago, it was stated that the board should “ even go to the extent of commandeering some office in some public building ” for the family. The floor area of the bedroom the family were living in was about 7ft by 7ft, and the woman was sleeping there with four of her six children. There were rat holes in the floor, and they had to keep a dog in the room at nights to keep the rats from. the children. The woman was deserted by her husband 12 months ago. The family received charitable relief, but it was not sufficient for their needs. They received a loaf of bread and a quart of milk daily. Tho chairman of the board said the superintendent already had the matter in hand.
