PRICE OF COAL.
TO TUB EDITOR. Sir, —We beg to make a protest against the rise in the price of coal that housewives are asked to pay from May 1. This new rate will increase the price an additional 3s 6d per_ ton. Such an increase, coming at this time of the year, will not be received gracefully by 'the consumer, because the lack of spending power in our limited weekly income does not warrant it, and we are of the opinion that it will only benefit the big combines, who buy coal at the same rate from the mines and pass this increased rate on to housewives. We have been told that certain vendors of coal have been selling at a reduced rate, and they have been able to do this ns they have not the overhead expenses as the large merchant, and, while we recognise that a fair margin should be given to the retailer, we feel that the present rise in price is not warranted. —We, are, etc., , A. Herbert, President. N. Hugoett, Secretary, The Dunedin Housewives’ Union. May 10
