FAIRY RINGS ON LAWN
Those rings sometimes greatly disfigure a lawn. As the fungus spreads outwards in a circle the thick luxuriant grass follows it, as feeding on the outer decayed portion it gathers a rich food, and hence its healthy appearance. The grass within-the circle either dies, or is of a poor appearance. The cause is a fungus, which, working from the centre outwards, continues until it reaches a certain area, when it exhausts itself or breaks out in other centres of infection, , and gradually gives the lawn an unsightly appearance, with bare patches here and there. To control these “rings” the hpst method is to dissolve about two ounces of sulphate .of iron in four gallons cf water and sprinkle the patches, especially the outer portion.-—The soil must be soaked, and to ensure this the lawn should be pricked with the prongs of a strong garden fork to enable the solution' to more quickly soak through the turf.
